In 2008, in the first free and fair elections held in Pakistan since 1970, the nation has voted even more emphatically and dramatically to tell those who have thoroughly messed up the very idea and ideology of Pakistan envisioned by its creator Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, that it wants to save the country from the inevitable disaster towards which these politically motivated and pseudo religious elements have been taking it for quite a long time.
Mr Jinnah had visualized a secular and democratic Pakistan in which there would be a complete separation between religious beliefs of its citizens and the functioning of the state. There would be complete provision of safety and security to people living in Pakistan and belonging to other religions. Though Pakistan was created as the country for all Muslims of undivided India, Jinnah was very clear that the religion had no absolutely no role to play in governance. His address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on August 11, 1947 made that ideological cornerstone absolutely clear.
Unfortunately, Jinnah’s concept of Pakistan was given a hasty burial as the past leaders of Pakistan went about Islamizing the nation and paved way for introducing Taliban style of Islam in Pakistan. Islam never stops both genders from learning, knowledge seeking and working to earn for their living and to contribute in the process of national development but sadly Taliban style Islam misrepresented Islam and created hindrances for those who wanted to progress. Instead of spreading messages for love, tolerance and peace they presented Islam in much aggressive manner, through exposing weapons, forcing unjust laws and suffocating the existence of those who just simply wanted to live a normal life.
The February 18, 2008 elections made it clear that people of Pakistan do not want the Al-Qaeda, Taliban and Pseudo mullahs to rule their country. Pakistani’s battle to save Jinnah’s country has not been won yet. Indeed, it has just been joined. The responsibility really comes on the present and coming generations to understand religion thoroughly and never let own styled religious fanatic forces to succeed in accomplishing their agendas.
